Convince My Boss

Keep every previous version of every Jira comment, including the ones that were edited or deleted.

Jira does not keep a history of comment changes. When someone edits a comment, the original text is gone. When someone deletes one, there is nothing left to look at. If you have ever been asked “what did that comment say before it was changed?”, you already know the problem.

Below are two emails you can copy, adjust and send.

I wanted to flag a gap in how we use Jira. Right now, if someone edits a comment on a ticket, the previous version is gone for good, and if they delete one there is no record it ever existed. We have hit this a few times when trying to reconstruct what was actually agreed on a ticket.

There is an app called Comment History from Redmoon Software that fixes it:

  • Every version is kept. Edit a comment and the previous text is still there, with who changed it and when.
  • Deleted comments are recoverable. Nothing disappears silently, which matters when a ticket becomes a dispute or an audit item.
  • Nothing changes for the team. People comment exactly as they do now. The history is just there when someone needs it.

I am writing to recommend Comment History from Redmoon Software to close a gap in our Jira audit trail.

Jira retains no history of comment modifications. When a comment is edited the prior text is permanently overwritten, and when a comment is deleted no record is retained. This creates a real exposure for us in three situations: reconstructing decisions on a ticket, responding to a customer or contractual dispute, and evidencing change control to an auditor.
